Review: An American Tapestry Series

"Each novel in the American Tapestries series sets a heart-stirring love story against the backdrop of an epic moment in American history.  Whether they settled her first colonies, fought in her battles, built her cities, or forged paths to new territories, a diverse tapestry of men and women shaped this great nation into a Land of Opportunity.  Then, as now, the search for romance was part of the American Dream.

Samantha Waldron and her family have traveled two thousand miles on the Oregon Trail to seek a new life in the Willamette Valley.  Just days from completing the arduous journey, Samantha's canoe capsizes on the icy Columbia River.  Fortunately, she is rescued by a handsome British fur trader, Lord Alexander Clarke, and taken to Fort Vancouver to regain her health . . . and lose her heart.

Spoiled society girl Jacqueline Abdingdon is used to getting her way.  So, when she learns that her father has arranged to marry her off to a man she doesn't love, she concocts a harebrained scheme.  She will give her identity and her tickets to sail on the maiden voyage of the luxurious Titanic to Tess, a poor, local farm girl.  As far as Jacqueline is concerned, the plan is foolproof.  After all, all Tess has to do is be everything that she's not!

Melanie Dobson's Where the Trail Ends (Summerside, 2012) and Janice Thompson's Queen of the Waves  (Summerside, 2012) are delightful reads for the lover of historical romance.  Where the Trail Ends explores the incredible sacrifices and hardships faced by the travelers of the Oregon Trail (did you know that they often shot the dogs for fear that barking would draw some sort of predator to the camp?).  Queen of the Waves is set against the almost unimaginable opulence of the Titanic.  Despite the vastly different settings, however, both books feature a strong heroine who faces difficult circumstances and emerges a better woman.  And, both books make you feel as if you are right there with the heroines changing, too.

I highly recommend Where the Trail Ends and Queen of the Waves, and I am really looking forward to the next books in the American Tapestries series.

I don't read historical romances any more, but it was interesting to see that the 'trails end' one is set here in Oregon near where we are now. I'd recognize all those places I'm sure.

These sound right up my cobblestone alley--as long as the women are wearing period costume, I am somehow able to read romances. I have a kindle now so I will be looking for them.

So glad to see you back online, MZ--you've been missed. Hope you're feeling better soon.
