Review: Love Finds You In Mackinac Island, Michigan

As the rest of their social set basks in Gilded Age prosperity, the Bissette family is losing its fortune.  The only thing standing between the family and financial ruin is daughter Elena's prospects for marriage to a wealthy man.  The moment the family arrives on exclusive Mackinac Island for summer holiday, Elena's mother begins matchmaking with a vengeance.  But, Elena's heart is in the stars.

Melanie Dobson's Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan (Summerside Press, 2012) is classic romance.  All the elements are there: wealth, gorgeous setting, mistaken identity, and a terrible misunderstanding that threatens to tear two lovers apart.  Sure, these are old standbys, but Dobson employs them so deftly that the story feels fresh and new.  Love Finds You in Mackinac Island, Michigan is a sweet, entertaining romance, and I couldn't put it down.

I don't know what it may have been like in the Gilded Age, but it's a cool place now. There are no cars, except emergency vehicles, and the shops sell (rightfully) famous Mackinac Island fudge.

I also dig Mackinac (pronounced "MackinAW") Island. It's got a history full of Native American legends and military stories. Romantically-speaking, The Grand Hotel is a center-point (the Christopher Reeves movie "Somewhere in Time" was shot on location there) and just one of the many attractions to see there. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on the island, so all travel is done by horse-drawn courage, bicycle or on foot. Take the ferry ride from Mackinac City (right at the tip of The Mitt) and take a unique visit back in time. This post brought to you by the Michigan Department of Tourism... come, experience Pure Michigan. ☺
